"Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy!"
Psalm 126:5–6
In 1953, in a humble home in Syracuse, Sicily, a small plaster plaque of the Immaculate Heart of Mary — a wedding gift to a young couple, Antonina and Angelo Iannuso — began to weep tears. For four days, the phenomenon continued, occurring whenever Antonina, who was suffering from a difficult and toxic pregnancy, experienced labor pains. This "Miracle of the Tears" was recognized by the Church as a sign of Mary's participation in the domestic and physical trials of her children. Rendered in gesso plaster and lacrime umane (human tears).
