In 1608, during a period when the Catholic faith in Lithuania had been suppressed and church lands seized by the Reformation, Mary appeared to several young shepherds on a massive rock in the village of Siluva. She was seen weeping, and when asked why, she lamented that the spot where her Son was once honored had been turned over to the plow and the pasture. This apparition led to the miraculous discovery of a long-buried chest containing the original title deeds to the church and a painting of the Virgin, sparking a national restoration of the faith.
