In 880, in the mountains of Montserrat near Barcelona, shepherd children report seeing lights and hearing music near a cave. Investigations lead to the discovery of a wooden statue of the Virgin and Child hidden within the rock. When attempts are made to move the image, it becomes too heavy to lift, and the site itself is taken as the intended location of devotion. The statue — darkened over time and known as La Moreneta — remains fixed to the mountain. Rendered in Catalan carved walnut wood with darkened patina, Romanesque polychrome wood carving tradition.
