In 1630, a terracotta image of the Immaculate Conception was being transported by wagon from Buenos Aires to Sumampa. When the caravan reached the banks of the Luján River, the oxen suddenly stopped and refused to move until the small crate containing the statue was removed. As soon as the image touched the ground, the oxen moved freely. Taking this as a divine sign that Mary wished to stay in that specific spot, the locals built a shrine that became the spiritual heart of Argentina.
