In 1858, in the remote village of Lourdes, Mary appeared eighteen times to a poor, asthmatic girl named Bernadette Soubirous at the Grotto of Massabielle. Wearing a white mantle and blue sash, and identifying herself as the "Immaculate Conception," Mary instructed Bernadette to dig in the dirt, uncovering a spring of water that has since become the site of thousands of documented medical and spiritual healings.
