In August 1879, during a period of intense famine and social upheaval in County Mayo, a silent apparition appeared on the gable wall of the parish church in Knock. For two hours, under a driving rain that left the ground beneath the vision dry, fifteen witnesses watched as Mary stood in prayer alongside Saint Joseph, Saint John the Evangelist, and a sacrificial Lamb upon an altar. Unlike other apparitions, no words were spoken; the vision was a living tableau of the Mass, a powerful reminder of the endurance of the faith during Ireland's "dark night."
