In 1981, at a secondary school in Kibeho, several students report apparitions of the Virgin, who identifies herself as "Nyina wa Jambo" ("Mother of the Word"). She appears within an ordinary school setting, speaking to the students about prayer, humility, and conversion. In one of the most striking moments, the visionaries describe graphic scenes of violence — rivers of blood, abandoned bodies, and widespread destruction — presented as a warning of what could come if her message is ignored. These visions are later understood in light of the 1994 genocide. Rendered in carved-twig relief patterns with natural black, white, and red pigments, traditional Imigongo wall technique of Rwanda.
