In the mid-16th century, a Spanish painter created an image of Mary for a chapel in Colombia, but the humid climate and a leaking roof quickly ruined the canvas. Eventually it was discarded and used as a rag. In 1586, a devout woman named Maria Ramos began to pray before it, pleading for it to reveal its former glory. The canvas began to glow with a brilliant light, and the colors miraculously restored themselves to a vivid, pristine state — a transformation witnessed by many.
