In 1933, in the village of Banneux in eastern Belgium, an eleven-year-old girl, Mariette Beco, reports a series of apparitions of the Virgin near her home. The figure appears at the edge of the garden and gestures for the child to follow, leading her to a small spring, which she identifies as a source "for all nations to relieve the sick." The devotion forms around the spring and the surrounding paths, where pilgrims come to drink, wash, and pray for healing. Rendered in Ardennes limestone and spring water, Walloon woodland tradition.
