"He has filled the hungry with good things."
Luke 1:53
In 1717, three fishermen casting their nets in the Paraíba do Sul River near Guaratinguetá retrieve the broken body of a small clay statue of the Virgin, followed by its head in a second cast. After placing the pieces together in their boat, their nets — previously empty — begin to fill with fish. The image, darkened over time by river silt, becomes associated with provision and unexpected abundance, its discovery rooted in water, labor, and survival. Rendered in hand-knotted cotton cast net mesh fishing net used on the Paraíba do Sul River, Brazil.
