"He has lifted up the lowly."
Luke 1:52
Across the Americas, Marian images take on Indigenous form in language, dress, and setting, emerging through encounters that speak directly to local communities. At Tepeyac, she appears to Juan Diego as a Nahua woman, speaking Nahuatl and leaving her image on agave cloth. In the Andes, she is rendered within highland landscapes and woven traditions; in the Philippines and parts of Africa, similar adaptations occur as Christianity meets existing cultures. Rendered in Mayan huipil brocade tradition of Guatemala.
