Across the Andean highlands, Marian images take on the form of the mountain itself. In paintings known as Virgen del Cerro, the Virgin's body is rendered as a triangular mass, merging with Cerro Rico in Potosí, where silver extraction defined the region's economy and labor. The form draws from both European Marian iconography and Indigenous understandings of the mountain as a living presence, holding together two systems of meaning within a single image. Rendered as the Andes mountains in Cusco school (escuela cuzqueña) style, a Roman Catholic artistic tradition based in Cusco, Peru (former capital of Inca Empire.)
