At the Crucifixion, Mary stands at the foot of the cross as Jesus is executed, a witness to the central event of the Passion. She is honored as this persona in Catholic devotion, most visibly in the Holy Week processions of Seville, where elaborately dressed statues of the Virgin known as Dolorosas are carried through the streets, her face marked by tears and her heart pierced by swords. Similar processions take place in Naples, Palermo, and throughout Latin America, accompanied by penitents in robes, candlelight, and funeral marches.
