"Do not offend the Lord our God any more, because He is already so much offended."
Message reported in the apparitions, Fátima, 1917
In 1917, in the fields of Cova da Iria near Fátima, three shepherd children — Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto — report a series of apparitions of the Virgin from May to October. She appears above a holm oak tree and delivers a consistent call to prayer, penance, and conversion with particular emphasis on the daily recitation of the Rosary. The apparitions culminate on October 13 with the "Miracle of the Sun," witnessed by tens of thousands, where the sun is reported to spin, change colors, and descend toward the earth before returning to its place. Rendered once brilliant tire, the sun with rays of light clearer and stronger than crystal glass, filled with sparkling water in sunlight, representing Cova da Iria, Portugal.
