A small statue of the Virgin nursing the Child survives a shipwreck while the rest of the cargo is lost, and is brought to San Juan as a sign of preservation and dependence on divine provision. The image's survival, paired with its intimate depiction of nourishment, establishes a direct link between Mary and the sustaining care believed to come from God.
