"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations."
Matthew 28:19
In 1652, in the forests near Guanare in present-day Venezuela, the Indigenous leader Coromoto and his wife encounter a radiant woman who instructs them to seek baptism. After an initial appearance near a river, the woman appears again inside their dwelling; when Coromoto attempts to seize her, she vanishes, leaving behind a small image imprinted on a piece of bark cloth. The object — marked by the encounter rather than painted by hand — becomes the fixed point of the devotion. Rendered in indigenous bark cloth with pigment imprint, Orinoco region material tradition.
