The devotion of Mary, Undoer of Knots traces its theological roots to the 2nd-century writing of Saint Irenaeus, who described Mary as untying the knot of Eve's disobedience through her obedient fiat at the Annunciation. It takes visual form in a Baroque painting by Johann Melchior Georg Schmidtner, c. 1700, housed in St. Peter am Perlach in Augsburg, Germany, which depicts Mary surrounded by angels, standing upon the moon, and carefully undoing a long white ribbon — the tangled threads of human lives — while the serpent lies crushed beneath her feet.

The devotion spread globally after Pope Francis, who encountered the image during his studies in Germany, carried it back to Argentina and promoted it widely. In the prayer tradition that surrounds it, Mary is addressed not as the source of healing, but as the one to whom God has entrusted the untying of the knots that bind His children — an intermediary between suffering and the freedom that Christ alone can give.
