"A great sign appeared in heaven..."
Book of Revelation 12:1
Mary is understood as queen not by her own claim, but through her relationship to the eternal king, Christ. This identity is rooted in the 12th century hymn Regina Caeli (Latin for "Queen of Heaven"). Drawing from the structure of the Davidic kingdom, where the king's mother holds a place beside the throne, Christian tradition extends this role into heaven. Because her son reigns, she is seen to share in that kingship, elevated not in isolation, but in direct relation to Him. Rendered in Renaissance-era gold Pastiglia low relief modeling style of Italy.
