Light is used in Christian tradition as a primary sign of presence — continuous when sustained. Oil lamps, candles, and sanctuary lights are maintained through repeated tending. This material dependence gives light a specific character: it exists only when it is kept. In Marian imagery, light is applied as illumination rather than surface. Gold ground in icons, glass tesserae in mosaics, and candlelight in devotional spaces are used to produce a steady, non-naturalistic radiance.
